What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Persistent, throbbing pain that paracetamol isn’t touching is often a sign of infection or deep decay. If it’s keeping you up at night or radiating into your jaw, don’t wait.
A fracture from a fall, sport, or an unfortunate encounter with a toffee can expose sensitive tissue and cause real discomfort. Sharp edges can also cut the inside of your mouth.
This one is time-critical. Pick the tooth up by the crown, rinse it gently, and call us straight away. You’ve got around 30 minutes to give it the best chance of being saved.
The exposed tooth underneath is vulnerable, sensitive, and at real risk of cracking further. It won’t sort itself out on its own.
Swollen gums, a bad taste, or a throbbing ache near a tooth is often infection. Abscesses can escalate quickly, so call us the same day.
If swelling has spread into your face or neck, the infection is on the move. If it’s affecting your breathing or swallowing, go to A&E straight away. For anything less severe, call us immediately.
Partially erupted wisdom teeth get infected fast, especially when food gets trapped around them. If you’ve been managing the pain for a couple of days and it’s getting worse, it’s time to come in.
If your appliance is cutting your mouth or making it impossible to eat, we’ll assess it and find the quickest fix.
Persistent bleeding from a socket or gum lasting more than 20 minutes despite firm pressure needs to be looked at.
What Does Emergency Treatment Cost?
We’ll always give you a clear, written breakdown before any treatment starts. There are no surprises here.
NHS patients: Emergency appointments are included within your course of treatment if you’re a registered NHS patient. Examinations are free.
Private patients and non-registered patients: The private examination fee is £70, which covers your assessment and X-rays if needed. Treatment costs from there:
- Extraction: from £120
- White filling: from £135
- Root canal: from £390
- Re-cementing a crown: included in exam where straightforward
- X-rays: from £18 each

In most cases, yes. We keep emergency slots back every day and see the majority of patients the same day. Call as early as you can. If you're in severe pain, have an abscess, or have had a tooth knocked out, tell us when you call and we'll prioritise you accordingly.
We're open Monday to Thursday 8:30am to 5:30pm, and Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm. We're closed at weekends. If you need out-of-hours help, call NHS 111 and they'll direct you to the nearest available emergency dentist in Edinburgh. For anything life-threatening, go straight to A&E.
