Cookie Policy

What Is This Policy?

This cookie policy explains what cookies are, how Newkirkgate Dental Care uses them on our website at newkirkgatedental.co.uk, and how you can control which cookies are placed on your device.

We have tried to write this in plain English rather than dense legal language. If you have any questions that this policy does not answer, please get in touch at smile@newkirkgatedental.co.uk or call 0131 554 3509 and we will be happy to help.

This policy should be read alongside our Privacy Policy, which covers how we handle your personal data more broadly.

What Are Cookies?

A cookie is a small text file that is placed on your computer, tablet or smartphone when you visit a website. The website sends the cookie to your device and your browser stores it. When you return to the same website, your browser sends the cookie back, allowing the website to recognise your device and remember certain information about your visit.

Cookies are widely used across the internet to make websites work more efficiently, to provide a better user experience, and to give website owners information about how their site is being used.

Cookies do not contain viruses or malware. A cookie on its own cannot be used to identify you as an individual unless combined with other information.

There are two main types of cookie based on how long they last:

Session cookies are temporary. They are placed on your device when you visit a website and deleted automatically when you close your browser.

Persistent cookies remain on your device for a set period of time, or until you delete them manually. They allow the website to remember your preferences or recognise your device on return visits.

How Newkirkgate Dental Care Uses Cookies

We use cookies on newkirkgatedental.co.uk for three purposes: to make the website function correctly, to understand how visitors use the site, and where you have given consent, for marketing purposes.

Essential Cookies

Essential cookies are necessary for the website to work. Without them, parts of the site would not function properly. These cookies do not collect personal data that could be used to identify you, and they cannot be switched off in our systems.

Examples of what essential cookies do on our site:

• Remember your cookie consent preferences so we do not ask you repeatedly
• Allow the contact form and online enquiry functions to work correctly
• Maintain your session while you navigate between pages

Because these cookies are strictly necessary for the site to function, they are placed without requiring your consent under UK GDPR and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR).

Analytics Cookies

Analytics cookies help us understand how visitors use our website. They collect information about which pages are visited most often, how long visitors spend on each page, where visitors come from, and whether they encounter any errors. This information is aggregated and does not identify individual visitors.

We use this data to improve the website, make content more useful, and identify pages that may not be working as intended.

Analytics cookies we may use include those provided by Google Analytics. Google Analytics data is processed in accordance with Google’s privacy policy. Where we use Google Analytics, we have configured it to anonymise IP addresses before the data is processed.

Analytics cookies are placed only with your consent. You can withdraw consent at any time through your browser settings or the cookie preference tool on this website.

Marketing Cookies

Marketing cookies are used to track visitors across websites and display advertisements that are relevant to individual users. They are sometimes called targeting or advertising cookies.

We may use marketing cookies to understand the effectiveness of any advertising we run online, to show relevant content to users who have visited our website, and to measure how many people see and interact with our adverts.

Marketing cookies are placed only with your explicit consent. You can withdraw consent at any time. Withdrawing consent will not affect the lawfulness of any processing carried out before withdrawal.

Cookies Used on This Website

The table below sets out the main cookies used on newkirkgatedental.co.uk. This list may be updated periodically as the services we use change.

This table is reviewed and updated periodically. If you notice a cookie that is not listed here, please let us know at smile@newkirkgatedental.co.uk.

Third-Party Cookies

Some cookies on our website are placed by third-party services rather than by us directly. We do not have direct control over these cookies, but we only allow third-party cookies from services we have reviewed and are satisfied with from a privacy perspective.

Third-party services that may place cookies on our website include:

Google Analytics: We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use our website. Google Analytics uses cookies to collect anonymous data about website traffic and behaviour. You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking across all websites by installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on available at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Google Maps: Our contact page embeds a Google Maps widget to help patients find the practice. Google Maps may place cookies when the map is loaded. These are subject to Google’s privacy policy.

DentalHub: Our online booking system is provided by DentalHub. When you use the booking function, you interact with DentalHub’s platform, which may set its own cookies. DentalHub’s use of cookies is governed by its own privacy policy.

Facebook Pixel: Where we run advertising on Facebook or Instagram, we may use the Facebook Pixel, which places a cookie to help us understand the effectiveness of our advertising. This is only active where you have consented to marketing cookies.

How to Manage Your Cookie Preferences

You have several ways to control which cookies are placed on your device.

Through Our Cookie Banner

When you first visit newkirkgatedental.co.uk, you will be presented with a cookie consent banner that allows you to accept all cookies, reject non-essential cookies, or manage your preferences individually. You can return to these preferences at any time by clicking the cookie settings link in the footer of our website.

Through Your Browser

All major browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings. You can set your browser to block all cookies, block only third-party cookies, or notify you when a cookie is placed so you can decide whether to accept it.

The links below take you to the cookie settings pages for the most commonly used browsers:

• Google Chrome: chrome://settings/cookies
• Mozilla Firefox: about:preferences#privacy
• Microsoft Edge: edge://settings/privacy
• Safari (Mac/iOS): Safari Preferences, then Privacy
• Samsung Internet: Settings, then Privacy and Security

Please note that blocking all cookies may affect the functionality of our website and other websites you visit. Essential cookies cannot be disabled as they are necessary for the site to work.

Opting Out of Google Analytics

You can prevent Google Analytics from collecting data about your visits across all websites by installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, available at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Opting Out of Interest-Based Advertising

If you would like to opt out of interest-based advertising from a range of providers, you can do so through the Your Online Choices tool at youronlinechoices.eu or the Digital Advertising Alliance’s opt-out page at optout.aboutads.info.

Do Not Track

Some browsers include a Do Not Track feature that sends a signal to websites requesting that your browsing not be tracked. There is currently no agreed industry standard for responding to Do Not Track signals, and our website does not alter its behaviour in response to them. You can manage your cookie preferences directly through the methods described in Section 5 above.

Cookies and Children

Our website is not specifically directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly use cookies to collect data about children. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal data through our website without parental consent, please contact us at smile@newkirkgatedental.co.uk and we will take steps to remove that information.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this cookie policy from time to time to reflect changes in the cookies we use, changes in legislation, or changes to the services we use on our website. The current version will always be available on this page.

Where changes are significant, we will update the “last reviewed” date at the top of this policy and, where appropriate, notify users through the cookie consent banner.
