Implant-Retained Dentures in Edinburgh

If your dentures feel loose, unstable or uncomfortable, implant-retained dentures could change your experience entirely. Supported by two or more dental implants, they stay firmly in place while eating and speaking, and are still removable for cleaning.

Newkirkgate Dental Care at 2 Great Junction Street, Leith, Edinburgh EH6 5LA provides implant-retained denture treatment for patients across Edinburgh and the Lothians. Implant-retained dentures use two or more dental implants to anchor a removable denture, providing significantly improved stability compared to conventional dentures. Principal dentist Fotis Bousis (GDC 187226) holds a Masters degree in dental implantology. Implant-retained dentures are a private treatment. Finance is available through Tabeo. To book a consultation, call 0131 554 3509 or visit newkirkgatedental.co.uk.

Dentures That Actually Stay in Place

One of the most common things patients tell us about their existing dentures is that they move. Not always dramatically, and not always painfully, but enough. Enough to make eating certain things unreliable. Enough to affect how you speak. Enough to make you self-conscious about it in company.

The lower jaw is the most common problem area. A lower full denture has far less surface area for retention than an upper denture, and the movement of the tongue and cheeks during eating and speaking constantly challenges its position. Adhesives help but they are a daily inconvenience and they do not solve the underlying issue.

Implant-retained dentures solve the underlying issue. Two implants placed in the lower jaw, or two to four in the upper, provide fixed anchor points that the denture clips onto. The denture cannot lift, shift or move during use. It stays exactly where it should be, every time.

We provide implant-retained denture treatment for patients from across Edinburgh and the Lothians, including patients from Musselburgh, Dalkeith, East Lothian, Portobello, Newhaven, Trinity and Edinburgh city centre who are looking for a better denture experience without the full commitment of fixed implant treatment.

How Implant-Retained Dentures Work

  1. 1
    The Implants
Two to four dental implants are placed in the jawbone in carefully planned positions. Fotis Bousis plans the placement using X-rays and CBCT imaging to ensure the implants are positioned to provide maximum support for the denture and to take advantage of the best available bone. The implants are left to integrate with the jawbone over a period of eight to twelve weeks. During this time, the existing denture or a temporary denture can typically still be worn with some modifications.
  2. 2
    The Attachments
Once the implants have integrated, small attachments called locator abutments or ball abutments are placed on top of the implants. These are the components that the denture clips onto.
  3. 3
    The Denture
The existing denture may be modified to incorporate the attachment components, or a new denture may be fabricated. The attachment components in the base of the denture connect to the abutments on the implants with a satisfying click, providing a secure, stable fit. The denture is still removable. You take it out for cleaning at night and reattach it in the morning. The attachments typically need replacing every one to two years as they wear.

Who Is Suitable for Implant-Retained Dentures?

Implant-retained dentures are designed for patients who are already wearing a full denture, or who are about to need one, and who want the improved stability that implant support provides.

Suitability depends on the available bone volume in the jaw, general health and the absence of active gum disease. Long-term denture wearers sometimes have significant bone loss, which can make implant placement more complex. Fotis Bousis will assess your bone volume using a CBCT scan at the consultation and give you an honest recommendation.

For patients with very extensive bone loss, alternative options such as bone grafting or All-on-4 treatment may be discussed. Where implant-retained dentures are suitable, they are a highly effective and life-improving solution.

You are In Experienced Hands

Implant placement for implant-retained dentures at Newkirkgate is carried out by Fotis Bousis, who completed a three-year Masters degree in dental implantology in London. He uses digital planning techniques to maximise precision in implant positioning and has placed implants for patients across a wide range of clinical situations.

Patients consistently describe his approach as calm and unhurried, which matters particularly for patients who are anxious about the surgical aspect of implant placement. The procedure is less involved than most patients expect, and the outcome is a significantly better experience of wearing dentures for the rest of their lives.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Implant-Retained Dentures

Implant-retained denture fees at Newkirkgate Dental Care are to be confirmed. Contact the practice on 0131 554 3509 to book a consultation with Fotis Bousis, where a full written treatment plan and cost breakdown will be provided. Patient finance through Tabeo is available to spread the cost into manageable monthly payments with interest-free options. The cost depends on the number of implants required and whether a new denture needs to be fabricated.

For a lower implant-retained denture, two implants are typically sufficient to provide excellent stability. For an upper implant-retained denture, two to four implants are usually recommended as the upper jaw typically has less dense bone and greater biting forces act on the upper arch. Fotis Bousis will recommend the optimal number of implants for your specific situation based on the CBCT scan assessment.

In many cases, yes. If your existing denture is in good condition and fits reasonably well, it may be possible to modify it to incorporate the attachment components rather than fabricating a completely new denture. This is assessed at the consultation. If the existing denture is old, poorly fitting or in poor condition, a new denture will typically be recommended alongside the implant treatment.

The implant placement is carried out under local anaesthetic and is significantly more comfortable than most patients expect. Post-operative discomfort is typically mild and well-managed with over-the-counter pain relief for a few days. Most patients are surprised by how quickly they recover. Fotis Bousis's calm, unhurried approach to the procedure is consistently noted in patient feedback.

Implant-retained dentures are removable. They clip onto implants for stability during use but are removed for cleaning and at night. All-on-4 provides permanently fixed teeth that are not removed. All-on-4 is generally considered the better long-term option in terms of stability and bone preservation, but it involves a higher cost and a longer treatment process. Implant-retained dentures are an excellent middle ground for patients who want significantly better stability than conventional dentures without the full commitment and cost of fixed implant treatment. Your dentist will help you decide which is the better fit for your situation.
